A residency night, and that is the honest limit of what can be said about it. The Blues Project -- the New York band built around Danny Kalb, Al Kooper and Steve Katz -- were working a long stand at the Matrix, the small club on Fillmore Street, running September 7 through 15, 1966. September 10 falls squarely in the middle of it. We know the band was in the room across those nights because the tapes survive and were later released as "Live at the Matrix September 1966"; what does not survive is a night-by-night account. There is no September 10 setlist to quote, and inventing one would be the easiest lie in this archive to tell. So: the Blues Project, on a Saturday, in a club that held a few hundred people, somewhere inside a nine-night run -- and no more precision than the record actually supports.
