Opening night. On Thursday, September 11, 1969, Bill Graham opened a four-night run at Fillmore West behind Randy Tuten's BG-191: the Steve Miller Band headlining, with the James Cotton Blues Band and Keef Hartley underneath, and Little Princess #109 on lights (bill, dates and poster credit per wolfgangs and famsf). It is a clean, well-documented ballroom bill -- Miller's blues-rock at the top, Cotton's harmonica in the middle, Hartley's band opening -- and a useful marker of how far the scene had travelled. Two years earlier Miller had been billed as the Steve Miller Blues Band, closing out residencies in the small room at the Matrix on Fillmore Street. By 1969 he headlined Graham's flagship as a matter of course, and the run stretched to four nights.
