Night two of three. Rick Griffin's BG-136 had opened at Fillmore West the evening before, and on Friday, September 13, 1968 the same bill came back: Big Brother and the Holding Company headlining, Santana beneath them, Chicago Transit Authority at the foot of the poster, lights by Holy See (bill and dates per wolfgangs, famsf and rockposters). The fuller telling of what that lineup means -- Janis Joplin still fronting Big Brother with her departure months away, Santana not yet past Woodstock, Chicago Transit Authority still spelling out all three words -- belongs to the September 12 opening night. What the 13th adds is the ordinary fact of a Graham weekend: the same three bands, the same room, a second night's crowd. Across town the Avalon was opening FD-137 the same evening, which made this one of those San Francisco Fridays where the choice was genuinely hard.
