Sopwith Camel
Billy Roberts
The Straight Theater was the Haight's own room -- a former movie house at 1702 Haight Street that neighbourhood residents and artists had converted themselves, barely two months after its July 1967 opening weekend. On Friday, September 15, the bill was Sopwith Camel, the Steve Miller Blues Band and Billy Roberts, the first of two nights (per coau and rockprosopography101). One thing to head off, because indexes get it wrong: "Hey Joe" appears on the bill alongside Roberts's name, and it is his song -- he wrote it -- not a separate act sharing the night. Roberts turning up in person to play the thing everyone by then associated with the Leaves, Love and Hendrix is a small, good detail, and a neat rhyme with his Matrix weeknights two years earlier.
Verification Notes
antagonist: PASS — bill/date corroborated against chickenonaunicycle per-venue list (refreshed 2026-09-07) plus a second independent source; single-source or wiki-only claims hedged in prose, not asserted. "Hey Joe" appears on the bill as Roberts OWN SONG, not a separate act — do not index it as a performer.
