A year to the day before the Grateful Dead's skeleton went up at the Avalon, this is what the San Francisco scene looked like: Jefferson Airplane playing a Thursday at the Matrix with JC Burris, the first of two nights, September 16-17, 1965. The Airplane were the club's house band in those opening months -- Marty Balin had built the room for them, and they played it the way a house band does, regularly and without ceremony. JC Burris was a harmonica player and bones player, Sonny Terry's nephew, working the same small stage. No poster exists because the Matrix did not print them and because nobody yet thought a Thursday needed commemorating. Set this next to FD-26 on the same calendar square one year later and the gap is the whole story: from a folk club with a residency to a ballroom scene with its own iconography, in twelve months.

Verification Notes

antagonist: PASS — bill/date corroborated against chickenonaunicycle per-venue list (refreshed 2026-09-07) plus a second independent source; single-source or wiki-only claims hedged in prose, not asserted. Airplane in their house-band months at the Matrix, roughly a month after the club opened. A full year before FD-26.
